31,670 marriages and 10,175 divorces last year

31,670 marriages were concluded in Serbia last year, which is 3.5 percent less than in 2022, according to the State Statistical Office, which also noted that the number of first marriages, which totalled 25,887, saw a decline of 3.8 percent compared to the previous year.

The number of concluded marriages per 1,000 inhabitants was 4.8. Men got married at an average age of 34.5 years, and women at 31.4 years. The most common were ethnically homogeneous marriages, i.e., marriages between spouses of the same nationality, accounting for 84.8 percent or 26,841 marriages.

In the majority of cases, the spouses had the same level of education. Such marriages accounted for 67.2 percent of those concluded. Regarding economic activity, in 23,413 marriages, or 73.9 percent, both spouses were economically active.

The majority of marriages, 91.7 percent or 29,052, were concluded between Serbian citizens.

As for divorces, 10,175 marriages were dissolved last year, which is 3.7 percent more compared to the previous year. The number of divorces per 1,000 inhabitants was 1.5. The average age of husbands at the time of divorce was 45.2 years, and for wives, it was 41.7 years. Most divorces, 5,270 or 51.8 percent, happened in marriages with children, and in 49.7 percent of such marriages, the spouses had one child. After divorce, the custody of children was most often given to mothers, i.e. in 3,613 cases, or 68.6 percent.

On average, marriages lasted 13.7 years before ending in divorce. Data also showed that men and women are entering marriage later in life and also divorcing later. The average age difference between spouses was slightly over three years, with men typically being older than women, which applies to both concluded and dissolved marriages.
