25% of small businesses in Serbia closed in 2020

According to data from the Register of Business Entities, at the beginning of 2021, there are a total of 400,646 active business entities registered in Serbia – 121,690 companies and 278,956 small businesses.

In 2020, there was an increase in the total number of registered business entities by 9,879 compared to the beginning of 2019.

In 2020, 9,176 companies and 29,810 small businesses were registered, which is 19 more companies than in 2019, but also about 25% fewer small businesses than in 2019, according to the website of the Union of Employers of Serbia.

Most of the companies founded in 2020 are engaged in non-specialized wholesale trade, software development, construction of residential and non-residential buildings, consulting activities related to business and other management, road freight transport, catering and mobile catering activities, mail or online retail trade, consulting activities in the field of information technology, engineering and technical consulting, leasing and management of own or leased real estate.

Most small businesses belong to the following categories – restaurants and mobile food service facilities, business and other management-related consulting activities, hair and beauty salons, road freight transportation, motor vehicle maintenance and repair, beverage preparation and service services, other specific construction work not mentioned, computer programming, engineering and technical consulting, and floor and wall covering installation.
