2023 birth rate in Serbia lowest since Second World War

In Serbia, from January to December 2023, compared to the same period in 2022, the birth rate fell by 2.3 percent, as did the number of deaths by 12.4 percent, the State Statistics Office (RZS) announced today.

A total of 97,098 people died in Serbia last year and 60,813 babies were born alive in 2023.

RZS also stated that in the period from January to December 2023, there was a decrease in the number of live births by 1,437, or 2.3 percent, as well as a decrease in the number of deaths by 13,741, or 12.4 percent, compared to the same period of the previous year.

In the same period in 2022, there were 62,250 live births, which is 188 or 0.3 percent more than in 2021, when there were 62,062.

In 2023, the fewest babies ever were born in Serbia since the Second World War.

The number of deaths in Serbia in the period from January to December 2022 was 110,839, which is less by 25,062 or 18.4 percent compared to the same period in 2021, when the number of deaths was 135,901.
